The Shop embraces all of the 70s beach vibes, with a feminine flare

We created this space to really feel like you were walking into a cool friend’s beach house. We loved the architectural shape and features of the building, and how much light came into the space. It’s warm, woody and has a natural beach vibe, so we decided to capitalize on that. By mixing old and new, custom and store bought, and natural and colourful, we designed a space that feels ultimately unique to The June. It embraces all of the 70s beach vibes that we love, with a femme flare.

Here are the before and afters of this space, plus our source guide for all things furniture, fixtures + accessories in this space, as seen in Motel Makeover.

JUNIFY TIP

1) One of our favourite ways to design unique spaces is by exploring mixing custom, vintage and store bought pieces. The contrast creates a timeless and effortless space, while still remaining bold and playful. We knew we wanted good quality furniture that felt laidback but curated, so we were really drawn to Article. Article’s pieces are stylish and cool, with interesting shapes and classic textures. They outfitted this space perfectly the tan leathers, natural woods and midcentury shapes really brought out the retro, natural look we were going for.

2) It's all about the thrifting! Once we secured the direction of the furniture, we were able to focus on bringing custom and vintage pieces into the space to layer on even more personality and create a real lived-in space. Read on for those!

3) Our favourite #ikeahack of Motel Makeover appeared in The Shop. We took basic Ikea cabinet bases, and then worked with Kitch for unpainted slab door fronts that arrived ready for paint! This was the perfect way to get a custom look and lean in to our existing paint palette, while also staying on budget. And yes, you guessed it, we painted those cabinet doors Apricot Beige!

THE FIRST IMPRESSION

This is the first thing you see when you walk into the space, so we wanted to make a statement! For us, it was all about accentuating the height of these gorgeous vaulted ceilings and playing them up even further with this deep, worked in leather couch. Plus, we love the contrast of the leather and the marble table it makes for an interesting, multi-layered look. Ultimately, this is a spot you immediately want to sink into.

THE SURF INSPIRED NOOK

This spot kind of unintentionally became the star of the show in The Shop. It’s the go-to selfie spot because of the incredible hand-woven tapestry, revitalized surfboard and funky tan sofa. The mix of colour, shape and texture brings the ultimate carefree character to this nook, and people love it just as much as we do!

THE GAMES NOOK

This little back section was really about maximizing space, and making an area that felt comfortable for a group of people to sit down, sip on their coffee and play a game together in. We continued the leather material with a functional bench that seamlessly blends in, and then switched it up with braided, oversized lounge chairs to make it extra cozy.

THE LOBBY BAR

This sweet little spot is the heart of The Shop. It’s the epitome of The June it’s bold, playful, feminine and cool and entirely custom. It captures a feeling of wanting to escape and visit a more nostalgic time. Plus, it’s where our concierges pour wine and connect with our guests. We had our friend and mixed media photographer, Christine Flynn curate this vintage beach inspired gallery wall, which centers a custom neon sign. Our tip? Always go for a pop of neon!

THE RETAIL SPACE

We wanted to create a retail space that offered our most asked about and loved items from the motel, plus a selection of curated goods from other female founders and a spot to grab morning coffee. But, we didn’t want just any space, so we used Ikea cabinet bases and then worked with Kitch to create do unpainted slab door front. Of course we painted them Apricot Beige, after all every space needs a pop of blush!
