Our retro, surf inspired coffee table in The Shop

We’re passionate about creating spaces that feel well lived in, and that invite you to sit down and stay a while - whether you’re sipping on a glass of wine or popping on a record, our spaces are meant to be experienced. One of our favourite ways to create a sense of place is by using coffee table books and styling pieces to set the style and mood of any room.

Here are some of our coffee table styling secrets.

CHOOSE A THEME TO TELL A STORY AROUND

We’re big fans of personifying the spaces we design for The June to come to life in. In Sauble Beach, we designed The Shop to feel like a good friend’s beach house. You know, somewhere you can walk into barefoot, kick back on a buttery leather sofa and dive into a good book. We knew we wanted to lean into the beach house theme, but we also wanted to make it a bit more eclectic and intentional, so we added unique vintage elements to tell the story of hanging out in a 70’s surf town: a wooden shaka, a massive vintage shell bowl and a coffee table actually shaped similarly to a surfboard.

Junify Tip: Sometimes the best statement pieces feel out of place until they’re styled properly. This shell bowl was questionable in store, but really completed the look and feel of this retro, surf inspired coffee table.

PLAY WITH HEIGHT, COLOURS + MATERIALS TO CREATE DYNAMIC LAYERS

We believe strongly in mixing all design elements - from height and shape to colour and texture - to bring out the most of any styled nook. In this seating area, the coffee table really wasn’t meant to be the star, so we chose to play on the existing colours around it by leaning into clay and tan tones to complement the couch and all the greenery to tie the plant lady vibes of the space together. Then, we layered thick books with the larger pot to create a more maximalist feel. All of the materials here complement each other and the surrounding space, even though we’re mixing terrazzo with the coasters, marble with the table and clay with the pots. Whoever said less is more hasn’t met us ;)

Junify Tip: We love the juxtaposition of layering something minimalist with something more bold to create a subtle statement.

INCORPORATE FUN AND APPROACHABLE ELEMENTS

Coffee tables don’t have to be just for show. They’re a key opportunity to create an experience in your space. This coffee table is in the center of one of the large seating areas in The Shop, so styling this one was less about making a design statement, and more about making it a functional and funky spot to sit down and hangout in. We’re pretty obsessed with bringing retro moments back to life, so naturally we researched and found the perfect vintage inspired tic tac toe game. It’s acrylic, so it reflects the light and colours around it which makes it a pretty unique piece. Plus, coasters at every table, because they add the ultimate visual interest while also protecting our furniture!

Junify Tip: We incorporated an interactive book on astrology here, because it’s a fun topic that piques people’s interest. Switch up the types of books you style with to surprise and delight your visitors!
